Towards any New Zealand islands, taking rental cars crossing islands is allowed with certain conditions.

Europcar vehicles are not permitted to travel on the ferry. For this reason we operate the inter-island travel service, whereby, the car is left at one ferry terminal and another car is waiting for you at the ferry terminal on the other island. Europcar only allows customers to exchange their vehicle once for cross-island travel，and does not support multiple vehicle exchanges between islands. Ferry Transportation: Not Allowed

Shouqizuche does not allow to bring the rental vehicle to ferry. You will drop off your car at one port and collect another after crossing to the other island. A minimum of 3 days consecutive rental required in each island (If the minimum length of rental requirement is not met, then the rental will be charged as two separate hires.).

The staff was very polite, but the car was not ready when we arrived. We had to wait 20 minutes because it wasn't cleaned yet. There was only one staff member handling the paperwork, which was quite slow, but I guess that's typical for New Zealand.
