1. The airport shuttle vehicles are convenient and easy to identify, which is great for first-time visitors to the US. There are pickup points at every exit.
2. The pick-up and drop-off procedures are straightforward. Picking up the car took about 15 minutes due to some questions about options, but once done, we headed out to pick up the car and left. For drop-off, we drove to the inspection area. Although it was 8 PM and there were queues, there were many inspectors and the process was quick, with the inspection and receipt printed within 2 minutes. No further waiting was needed.

Our self-drive route: After picking up the car that evening, we drove onto Highway 101 and reached Goleta in Santa Barbara after a 2-hour drive. We stayed there for 4 days for the Chinese New Year. On the 19th, we continued north on Highway 101, passing through the Danish Village and Monterey to Google and Stanford. After a day trip to San Francisco, we returned to Los Angeles via Highway 1. The drive along Highway 1 is beautiful, as others have mentioned, it's best to travel from San Francisco southwards. The route hugs the coastline with many scenic stops to enjoy the views and sea lions, including the 17-Mile Drive, Carmel-by-the-Sea, and Hearst Castle. There are many other small towns worth exploring if time allows, but our time was limited, and we felt we couldn't fully enjoy it. About an hour away from Los Angeles, there is the Camarillo Outlets where we shopped for a day. It's a great place for car shoppers because it's big, and you can leave your purchases in the car to continue shopping; otherwise, it would be tiring. Although there aren't any top brands, there are plenty of affordable options for most people. After that, we visited Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica Beach. We drove a total of 1200 miles, with rental costs at 2150 yuan and fuel at 950 yuan.
Tips:
1. Parking fees are expensive. Look for free parking spots, but note that red-painted curbs mean no parking, green and yellow-painted curbs have time limits (15 minutes and 2 hours), and follow signs carefully. Paid parking spots have self-service machines; you need to pay first and select your parking duration.
2. Do your homework in advance and note down detailed addresses (in English) of the places you plan to visit to avoid wasting time.
3. If the GPS indicates certain routes require permits, avoid those routes. We wasted 2 hours because they don't just turn you around but perform thorough checks before sending you on your way.
4. U-turns are almost non-existent in the US. If you make a mistake, find an alternate route instead.
5. Always stop at STOP signs, look around for 3 seconds before proceeding, and give way to pedestrians.
6. Traffic moves fast, and lane changes are rare unlike in China. If you're unfamiliar and driving slowly, expect to be honked at. This driving style suits men better, like a race track, but I find it stressful. My husband drove the whole way, and it's best to help watch the road.
