The service was excellent. Last time, the car broke down on the road, leading to a lengthy process involving towing and replacing the vehicle, which delayed everything. I requested a car in better condition, and the lovely lady immediately provided a brand-new car with just 3 miles on it. I almost wanted to give her a kiss.
The company billed me for the extra insurance even though I asked to decline it. They also hit me with an absurd $150 detailing fee after returning the car, even though the guy when I checked it back in said it looked good. All in all, my cheap rental ended up being more expensive than a premium car rental had I gone with a bigger brand company. Absolutely absurd. No one at Fox will respond to my emails or phone calls asking to escalate the issue up the chain. They sneakily had me sign a document adding insurance while quickly trying to finalize the booking after making me wait more than 30 minutes. I was behind one other person who was being helped when I walked in at around 10AM. Multiple other employees walking around the office, not doing anything substantial, and they just made me wait. When I finally get to the counter, I try and get through the process as fast as possible, and tell them I'm not interested in insurance as my personal car insurance will handle any problems. Then I somehow get billed an extra $100 for insurance over the duration of the trip. Absolute scam artists.
I took the car to the beach. We ended up getting a small amount of sand in the carpet. When I turned the car back in, I asked if that was ok, and was told it wouldn't be a problem. Next thing I know, an added $150 detailing fee was hit on my card. There's a car wash at a gas station less than a block away from this car rental shop. I could have easily gone there, paid $20, and got the car washed and fully vacuumed out. If the guy had bothered to mention the detailing fee to me, I would have just done that and taken 10 minutes of my time and saved $130.
Fox are scam artists. DON'T RENT FROM FOX
Ontario Airport has fewer customers, and the cars are shared among several rental companies. Hertz Rental—this will be the last time I rent from them. The originally assigned vehicle from Hertz was taken by another company, and they eventually assigned me a 2019 Nissan Altima with over 60,000 miles. On the afternoon of the return day, the car suddenly wouldn't start, likely due to a dead battery. It only got resolved after calling for roadside assistance to jump-start the car. Fortunately, the customer service from the rental platform was very responsive and followed up on the issue. However, does Hertz not inspect the vehicles they rent out to customers? Why would they allow a car in such poor condition to be rented? Since 2014, I've rented cars in the U.S. through various platforms and from six or seven different rental companies. Compared to companies like Avis or Alamo, Hertz shows an obvious gap in quality.
At the store, we upgraded to a Tesla Model 3. The staff at the store gave us a weekly discount, which was very cost-effective. The service was decent as well. The car was cleaned and delivered to us when we picked it up. The charging account was already set up. Renting a car in the US is still convenient and affordable.
