I used a notarized translation of my driver's license to pick up the car. I met a compatriot at the adjacent rental counter who couldn't pick up his car because he didn't have a notarized translation. He mentioned that he had never needed one in his previous trips to Europe, so he didn't bring it this time. To be safe, it's better to bring a notarized translation.
