I only used the car for one day and had to return early due to a family emergency. They showed no sympathy at all.

During the return at Christchurch Airport, the rental company's staff only asked if the car was returned with a full tank; no other checks were performed. I had to proactively ask if an inspection was needed, to which the staff responded no, just park the car in the designated spot. Later that evening, I received an email from the rental company stating that they found scratches and would withhold the entire deposit. Since I was driving on the left side, I was extremely cautious to avoid any accidents. The unconfirmed scratches and the subsequent charge made the rental experience rather unpleasant.
