First time renting a car abroad. Besides spending an extra £550, which was a bit confusing, the overall self-driving experience was very good. 1. In the UK, cars have right-hand drive and drive on the left; this needs some getting used to. 2. In rural areas of the UK, intersections often have roundabouts instead of traffic lights. Google Maps can sometimes lag, causing you to miss turns, so it requires adjustment. 3. There are no toll booths in the UK; the cost is included in the fuel, which is relatively expensive at £12.8-13.8 per gallon. 4. Always give way to vehicles going straight when making turns and to cars inside roundabouts; it's very orderly. 5. Parking must be done in designated parking areas or on the streets; short-term parking is often free. Paid parking lots either require you to pay after parking, based on the duration or prepay and display the ticket on the windshield. Parking fees vary but are generally cheaper than in China. I once parked continuously in a parking garage for two days, costing £10. 6. The roads are in excellent condition, smooth, without any roadworks over the 700 miles I drove. There were no traffic jams either. 7. I mostly drove on rural roads, not highways, enjoying the scenery along the way. Speed limits in towns are often 30 or 40 miles per hour but generally around 60 mph.
