Eventually, we resolved it by contacting the rental company. When renting a car in the USA, be extra vigilant and do not buy extra insurance; it's quite expensive.

I booked a car for $577 (12 days), including insurance. However, at pick-up, the car provided was $984 (rental cost around $800 with mandatory insurance for two items, about $200).

It took over an hour to queue for the rental car, which was really tiring. On the return trip, the tire went flat, costing me a lot of time and money. I got back to my place almost at dawn. They didn't allow an extension of a few hours for the return, which was a bit too strict.
