Significant and aggressive 'upselling' from the local staff team. The lady said I could not take the car unless I increased my 3rd party liability insurance. We were asked to pay another £300, on an initial booking of £106! Only from speaking separately with Sixt did I get the truth. It took over 2 hours to resolve and get the car. We actually had 37,500 USD of 3rd party insurance, which is the legal minimum, so we ended up taking the car.

The car rental process at Cancun Airport is quite efficient, and the service is very enthusiastic. There were no unnecessary upsells or difficulties. I think the main reason is the high traffic here, they neither have time nor need to make money by being difficult. Additionally, all the rental companies are lined up together, so the competition is fierce. If they have a bad attitude, they'll lose.

They couldn't find my booking.

They tried to sell me insurance and asked for a tip. When I refused, they made me wait. In the end, they charged us extra for a spare tire. It's ridiculous. Also, they give you the car absolutely empty of fuel and there is no fuel station around. They know it's impossible to bring back a car empty so they make profit on the fact that people bring back the car with fuel in it...
