HERTZ provided excellent service, explaining the rental details thoroughly. Returning the car was also very convenient as they have many locations! The car was relatively new.
They force you to buy additional insurance, otherwise they won't allow you to cross the border. The crossing fee is only 25 EUR, but the insurance costs 66 EUR plus tax, which altogether cost an extra 120 EUR. I booked a C-class but got an X1 instead, which is clearly not the same class in China. Maybe in Germany, X1 has the same price as C-class. I've had a good impression of Hertz before, but this experience was very disappointing. The staff refused to mediate over the phone with the booking agency. It was really frustrating. If I weren't in a hurry, I would've canceled the rental. Do not choose this company.
When picking up the car at Hertz, they said only an automatic Ford Fiesta 1.0 was available. It didn't seem like the car I reserved, so I paid an extra 140 euros to upgrade to a Volvo V60 Diesel D4 and accepted it. This was because the three major German brands don't allow their cars to leave Germany. At the Vienna airport return counter, a female clerk took the car back without giving any receipt and had a very poor attitude. To avoid complications, I called the Berlin airport rental counter right away. A man named Daniel answered and said he would handle it the next day and send me an email (which I never received). I even had him confirm with the Vienna counter. In the end, the bill showed the return time three days later than the actual return, and I was charged significantly more. Additionally, they charged me in dollars instead of euros using an unfair exchange rate (the receipt showed euros, but they charged 1.14 when the actual rate was 1.10). Always insist on being billed in euros.
I originally booked a Benz C-class, but there were none available when I arrived. The store recommended a Ford Rega. Looking back, thankfully they gave us an SUV; otherwise, there wouldn’t have been enough space for the luggage of five people.
Was offered an option to upgrade to SUV (Ford KUGA 2.0) by paying EUR5 per day. Happy with the upgrade!
