Terrible experience! I booked a Ford Explorer, which is a 4WD off-road vehicle, but I ended up with a 2WD SUV. I don't remember the exact model, but it was some Nissan SUV with poor performance. The car couldn't even climb a hill properly despite flooring the gas pedal, failing to outperform a small old sedan. Since a 2WD vehicle isn't allowed to go up to the Mauna Kea summit, we had to cancel our trip. The main reason we booked the expensive 4WD Ford Explorer was to go up the mountain. If I had known I'd end up with a 2WD SUV, I would have just booked the cheapest Ford Fiesta. We wasted thousands of dollars for nothing. The store staff had an extremely poor attitude. First, they offered us an upgrade to a 4WD for an extra $70 per day! I had already paid for a 4WD, but they gave me a 2WD instead, which is ridiculous! When we showed no interest in upgrading, they aggressively pushed third-party insurance, claiming it's legally required when we said we didn't want it. When we ignored this, their attitude turned extremely bad. We never had such a bad rental experience in Oahu or Maui. It greatly affected our travel mood! This happened at the Budget store near Kona Airport on the Big Island.
“Overall, easy rental process... best rate on the Internet!”
About Budget:8.6/10
Like: By far, Easy Rent Cars had the lowest rates for my trip. Budget employees were very friendly & helpful at both locations. Dislike: I liked everything about Easy Rent Cars. The only dislike I had was the car that Budget ended up giving me, it WAS in the category I selected but it proved to me why I would never buy a Hyundai. I was delayed picking up the car because power was out at the whole car rental facility in Atlantic City, not Budget's fault. Long wait to finally get the paperwork done, walked out to the car & found the side mirror very damaged which was not mentioned. I was given the Hyundai instead, looked ok but was let down driving it especially when trying to pull out in traffic.. NO energy. I didn't take the EZPass for the toll roads option, didn't make sense for my trip but the unit fell off the window & seemed to activate. I had to tell the toll worker to ignore the EZPass & I gave cash instead with a receipt back but I've been worrying since about being charged double. The Budget person at my dropoff airport had NO good answer when I questioned the incident. All they said is that I should watch my credit card for any additional EZPass charge for use of the device or the Pennsylvania Dept of Transportation will contact me directly IF any tolls are questionable. My trip is over, I really don't need any further stress just waiting to SEE.... I know none of this is Easty Rent Cars fault but I just wanted to let you know.
