Nice clean and comfortable car. Pleasant, competent staff. Great location. Just wish it had been available for the duration of my trip instead of a week.
First, I rented cars from both Dollar and Thrifty on the North and South Islands of New Zealand. These companies share the counter with Hertz, essentially making them smaller subsidiaries. However, their cars are not as good as Hertz. When I booked the rental, I had requested a Toyota Prado, and both companies confirmed this. But upon arrival, neither had the Prado. Instead, they offered a Mitsubishi Pajero diesel. I noticed Hertz had Prados available on site. When I inquired, I was told they either didn't have Prados or had very few. It seems they use the Prado as a lure and then give you the Mitsubishi Pajero, claiming it's a similar class vehicle. However, in my country, these two cars are in entirely different classes. These companies attract you with the lower price of a Prado but end up giving you another car. If you specifically want a Prado, I suggest not choosing these two companies, as they probably don't have it. Note that in New Zealand, there is a road usage fee for diesel cars, which will be reflected in your final bill when you return the car.
Our flight was originally scheduled to arrive at 7 PM, but it was delayed by over an hour. By the time we got our luggage, it was nearly 7:30 PM. The car rental location was right outside the airport exit, sharing a counter with Hertz. The staff was very meticulous and enthusiastic. We had to take two highways and needed to prepay with the rental company. After completing the paperwork at the counter, we followed the signs and walked a few minutes to the parking lot to pick up the car. We got a small SUV, which locals drive frequently. The car was relatively new, with just over 30,000 kilometers on it, and it was very clean inside. Dollar offers great rental rates, and we will choose them again next time we visit New Zealand.
“The car was fine, but fuel tank was not full and the attendant lied saying that was normal.”
About Dollar:7.7/10
The counter stuff was nice at first, but when I pointed out to them that the fuel tank wasn't full, the girl made up a story saying it was a gauge problem, that others had the same issue and the tank was indeed full. That was a lie because twice I filled it up and it showed perfectly on the panel. That means Dollar did not give me a full tank as I deserved.
In addition to credit and debit cards, you can now pay for online car rentals with cryptocurrency! Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) are accepted. Curious about how long a Bitcoin transaction takes or how to pay with Bitcoin? Read our FAQs for more details.
