I booked an automatic Touran but when I got to the airport, they said they didn't have any! They gave me an automatic Golf instead, but the price remained the same.
Arranged a change in return location through the hotel front desk by calling the rental company. Overall, satisfied. The rented car was brand new with only 9km on the odometer.
The front desk staff didn't speak much English when I first arrived, which made communication a bit difficult. However, the car pickup experience was excellent. I rented a compact Golf but received a nearly new Volkswagen Tiguan with only 6000 kilometers on it. The car was in top condition, though being a four-wheel drive, it consumed more fuel. Returning the car was simple; I just handed over the keys and there was no deposit fee. They only charged me the rental fee upon return. Overall, aside from the front desk's limited English, everything was great. I would consider renting from AVIS again, even though it's a bit pricey.
The process was quite convenient. They asked for the order, driver's license, passport, and notarized documents, then only inquired about additional insurance (I guessed, as my English isn't great). I declined, swiped my credit card, got the keys (which had the parking spot number), and left. Originally booked a BMW 3, but got a new Lada with only 1700 kilometers. Returning the car was also very easy; I just said 'done' to the staff (non-native speaker), they checked the car with a device, and it was fine. Back at the office, they gave me a receipt.
When we arrived at the airport to pick up the car, they required us to present two international credit cards for the driver as a guarantee. Avis explained that it was because we rented a high-end car, an Audi A4. I felt it was unnecessary. After some negotiation, they gave us a smaller Infiniti mini wagon. Although Avis said it was a downgrade, the car we got was brand new. Amazing!
The car had many minor scratches that needed to be carefully checked, photographed, and then confirmed in writing with the staff in the hall. The store at Madrid T1 is a long walk from T2, and there were many people in line, possibly because it was Sunday. The car we got was an older, basic model.
