They made things difficult on purpose. It took two hours to get the car at the site; if you wanted to get the car immediately, you had to pay extra for an upgrade. Five to six groups of Chinese people who arrived around the same time also faced the same issue. We had a reservation and paid in advance, so why couldn't they prepare the car ahead of time? It felt like we were renting last-minute. I had to stand in line three times before finally getting the car. They claimed that a foreigner in Izmir spoke Chinese, but he was just a figurehead who got flustered at the sight of female customers.
The service was acceptable. They may ask you to add insurance, but it's okay if you don't. However, I don't understand why the store was closed when I returned the car. On that day, the Budget store had no staff, so I returned the car at the Avis return point next door. They said it's the same company, so I was able to return the car there. The return process was quick; they checked that the fuel tank was full, started the car to make sure everything was fine, and that was it. No additional charges.
They charged an additional 137 euros for insurance at pickup, almost 1000 RMB. This was partly due to our language barrier and their aggressive upselling.
There was a guy who spoke Chinese at the pick-up location who insisted that the comprehensive insurance I bought was not good and tried to sell me their insurance. Almost fell for it. However, my insurance covered everything he mentioned. Although I canceled the additional insurance, I don’t know when I’ll get the refund along with the deposit. This might require additional communication later. When returning the car, the staff were cold, there were few of them, and everyone had to queue up. They even let foreigners cut in line.
The staff at the counter were very inefficient. There was only one person in line ahead of us, but it took them over 30 minutes. When it was our turn, it took nearly an hour to process our information. Doesn't the system synchronize information? They also tried to upsell us on full insurance. The car we received was older and not very clean.
The car pickup and drop-off process was very smooth. There was none of that insurance upselling I had read about before. The instructions were clear, and the car drove really well!
