The car was certainly value for money, but the toll administration fees are ridiculous as I pay them on the spot and get charged again by Aucar.
Otherwise a good experience.
Renting a car was very convenient and quick. Just sign the contract and watch a traffic regulation video, and you can pick up the car. Originally rented an A4, but got upgraded to a Q5. The car was very new. Returning the car was also easy, just wait for any charges or fines notifications.
Communication in Chinese was smooth, and there were no extra insurance sales pitches. However, they charged over 90 for tolls, and the handling fee was surprisingly high at over 70, which seems quite excessive. Plus, I have no recollection of driving on any toll roads.
We couldn't understand the person who told us where to go & then couldn't understand her when she was picking us up...it wasn't clear that she was a shuttle & not dropping off our van.
When we arrived at the rental car location, we had to wait 15-20 min for our car to be ready & then it turned out to be a huge box van (people mover) that looked like it had been in a more than a few accidents! I don't want to drive a wrecked car when we rent a car. I want something in good condition both inside & outside.
The car was quite old and made odd noises when braking.
Terrible customer service. Tried calling three different numbers for Aucar for pickup from the airport for, which none were answered for 15min.
Organised out of hours car drop off, but no one was waiting for us when we arrived.
It was a nice a car (dodge) clean and nice to drive just a little to small for 7 people. But it did the job and we only needed it for a couple of days. So all good!
Told I had an “upgrade” to a Jeep Cherokee which had serious damage to the left hand side of the vehicle. Stated I wanted a small car not a damaged SUV and informed they had no small cars and gave me a Hyundai. This car had serious understeer, accelerator would not engage when accelerating from stand still for 5 to 10 seconds then it would lurch forward. had only 1/4 of a tank. When I returned vehicle to “Tina” she said she would cover part of the fuel and knock $5 hire per day off. I would have much rather Ed the vehicle (or similar) that I had asked for and not had the condescending experience of being offered “an upgrade”. Car was not roadworthy for purpose and Tina, while giving a return, was still obnoxious with her attitude.
The rent was such good value I was a little concerned. Some reviews on other sites were raised caution but we found Aucar to be an excellent provider.
The pick up situation wasn’t the easiest but for the cheaper price you’ll always get off-airport companies! the van came to pick us up after 20mins or so and insisted we used kids car seats, which I found a professional and caring touch.
The car we had matched what we’d booked perfectly (large SUV- the company seems to specialise in them, there were loads!) and was clean and tidy.
Whilst loading my wife needed to breastfeed. Without asking one of the staff came over to ask if she needed anything to assist her, which is a really nice touch.
The staff took photos of the car in my presence and emailed them to me for evidence - nice smart and modern touch.
After rent the handover process was quick and the staff apologised for the delay getting us to the airport, even though it was only 5mins.
In summary we had an excellent car and the staff were professional, efficient and courteous. The value was excellent and I’d recommend giving Aucar a go.
Maybe for AUCars to have a fixed meeting spot for the shuttle. The text just had a number to call. The problem was the heavy accent of the person I called and I called them in the noisey environment of the airport. Maybe in the text nominate the meet spot. The shuttle also needed to be identified maybe two magnetic signs in door of shuttle. Other than that rental was great and staff at AU cars were courteous.
They have no idea about the process. If there is a problem, you just wait for charges and prepayments. The car tire went flat at night, and there was no assistance. We didn't get back to the hotel until 3 AM even though it started around 9 PM.
Very satisfied. I'd like to emphasize that I had two flat tires on the Great Ocean Road. We were a group of five, including adults and children. Although I had full insurance, the local service only towed the car but didn't transport people. It was already past 6 PM and getting dark, so we were very anxious. Fortunately, the rental company sent someone with spare tires to rescue us after more than three hours. We are really grateful to them.
Very convenient, pre-arranged pickup at the airport by calling after landing. Waiting time was not long; the driver helped with the luggage. The rental office is a 5-minute drive from the airport, and the car pickup process was swift. A clean small car ready to go!
