The paperwork took nearly an hour, which was a bit long, but the car condition was great. The return process was also very simple and I was very satisfied.
“Self-driving from the North Island to the South Island in Auckland.”
About AVIS:2.0/10
This was the worst car rental experience I've ever had. The receptionist spoke non-native English and tried to lecture me instead of arranging the North Island (Wellington) drop-off time because I didn't have a ferry ticket. She tried to educate me on planning my trip and booking hotels in advance, not understanding that it's a free-style trip. The website provided a drop-off location and time option for the North Island, and I made my selection online. There was no indication that the rental couldn't be processed without a physical ferry ticket. Your website's information was misleading. The service of this 9.3-rated international brand you recommended was worse than other companies I've used. They gave me a car key and made me push the cart with all my luggage to the car park, where there was no service personnel from your company, only others. After taking my credit card, the staff charged it without informing me, and I immediately saw a charge of over 60 NZD from my bank. I didn't enter a PIN or sign anything. This is not efficient service and raises trust issues. The last rental company from Auckland did not have such unprofessional service. This experience has made my vacation complicated. If using your website's process, please fulfill your responsibilities and coordinate properly. Do not create problems for customers, and ensure transparent communication.
For the first 4 days, I got the Hyundai iMax 8-seater van I had booked. The rental company provided a 2017 new car in great condition, and the pickup process was simple. On the fourth day, we needed to exchange the car in Wellington to get the same model in Picton on the South Island. However, AVIS in Picton couldn't provide the same model and gave us a 5-seater Highlander instead. They suggested we try our luck tomorrow morning if we don't pick it up today. Due to our itinerary and hotel reservations, we had no choice but to continue with the smaller vehicle for another 5 days. Key issues: 1. They did not provide a matching model and downgraded us, ignoring our concerns. 2. The service attitude was poor; they demanded payment for scratches on the previous vehicle (which was clearly noted by the front desk to have been caused by the previous renter). 3. They were verbally sarcastic and ignored our request for a similar 8-seater model. They showed disdain for Chinese people and accused us of being unreasonable when we left. Note, six adults and six suitcases crammed into a 5-seater SUV—it was unbearable.
Quick pick-up, and even quicker drop-off (as the staff was off-duty when I returned the car, and I was instructed to leave the keys in the box on the counter). The only downside was that the car seemed to drift a little. Everything else was great.
