“Decent enough city car, helpful staff, but Ancona train station pick-up location difficult to find.”
About AVIS:8.0/10
I think that cars with automatic transmissions should be more commonly available for the same price. I get it, Italians like manual transmissions, but not all of your foreign customers do.
Please, Avis, use better, larger signs to mark your office at Ancona train station.
I selected a VW UP or similar, got a Fiat Panda FWD. The Panda is a decent enough city car, easy to drive and park and so on. However, it is comically underpowered for hills and highways, even with only me and my bags in it. Great fuel economy though.
I upgraded my car to a bigger and the counter staff was more than willing to cooperate. Not many people on pickup because its still early. Car was not washed before pick up but not too dirty. I sent the car while the drop off point is still closed. Overall experience was good.
Due to COVID the pick up process was terrible - waiting for phone calls for over an hour rather than face to face contact. Fortuity the staff at the help desk realised this so reverted to a solution that worked.
I have rented cars overseas many times through QEEQ, and this time with AVIS in Milan, Italy was the worst experience ever!! They claimed the car I booked was unavailable and forced me to upgrade to a larger car at an additional cost. There was no effort to coordinate or provide an alternative. You either paid for the upgrade or had your reservation cancelled! Due to my fixed itinerary, I had to pay an extra €25 per day, totaling €150 for 7 days. They initially charged €200 on my card, and when I asked why, the AVIS staff feigned ignorance and said it was the system's fault. Additionally, the service at AVIS was terrible, with rude and unhelpful staff who had poor English skills. If I didn't want to pay more, they simply ignored me. The AVIS location at Milan Central Station was very hard to find, hidden in a corner. After waiting in line for over an hour with five people ahead of me, they had the audacity to say I was late! After finally completing the paperwork, I had to walk 15-20 minutes to the pick-up point, which was a difficult-to-find underground garage. When I arrived, I saw several Audi A1s, the car I initially booked, sitting unused. Yet the counter said none were available. Even the staff at the pick-up point were confused as to why I couldn't use one of these cars. Having already paid, I was left with no choice but to comply. I was in a hurry and felt coerced into spending more.
After 7 days, I returned the car in Florence at a combined location with a gas station. No AVIS staff were present, and the gas station attendant had to check the car for me over the phone, confirming all was fine and letting me leave. I asked for a receipt or an email confirmation, but was told it would be sent later, which never happened. Three days after returning the car, I was mysteriously charged around €800 on my credit card!
I immediately contacted QEEQ customer service, who acknowledged my problem and informed me that the Italian staff hadn't started working on it yet. It took over a week to get a response, explaining that the €800 was a security deposit that should have been charged at the beginning but was instead charged after I returned the vehicle. AVIS later revoked the authorization. Regarding the forced upgrade charges, AVIS claimed I was late and thus no similar cars were available. I pointed out their slow service, where it took one and a half hours to process five people with just one working counter. While in line, I had tried to explain my situation but was rudely asked to leave and wait outside! After some coordination, they refunded €60, which had been overcharged for fuel. However, no further explanation was provided. This was the most disappointing overseas car rental experience, especially from a large company like AVIS. They were deceptive and coercive. I will never choose AVIS again! Beware of AVIS in Italy! This experience was extremely poor!!
I've rented cars many times overseas through QEEQ, but this experience with AVIS in Milan, Italy was the worst!! They claimed the model I booked was not available and forced me to pay for an upgrade to a larger car, without attempting to coordinate or urgently arrange a new one. They gave me two choices: either pay for the upgrade or cancel the trip with a fee! Due to my fixed plans, I was forced to upgrade to a more expensive model at an additional 25 euros per day for 7 days, totaling an extra 150 euros. However, they charged 200 euros upfront on my card. When I asked why, AVIS staff pretended not to know and said the computer showed that fee.
The AVIS staff were extremely rude and impatient throughout, with very poor English skills, showing no willingness to help unless I paid more. The AVIS rental location at Milan Central Station is very difficult to find. I waited in line for more than an hour because there were five people in front of me. When it was my turn, they said I was late! After the paperwork, I had to walk 15-20 minutes to the pickup point, which was in a tricky basement area. When I got there, I found plenty of Audi A1s and similar cars, but at the counter, they said there were no cars of the same model available. I asked the pickup staff about the idle Audi A1s, but they also didn't understand, stating these cars were normal. They told me to talk to the front desk, but I had already paid! It felt like they saw my urgent schedule and forced extra charges on me.
After 7 days, I returned the car in Florence at a combined rental and gas station. There were no AVIS staff present, so I had to call and have the gas station staff inspect the car. Once verified, they let me leave. AVIS staff never appeared. I asked for a return receipt and email, and the gas station staff said they would send it when they returned, but I never received it. Three days later, my credit card was inexplicably charged around 800 euros! I immediately contacted QEEQ's customer service to resolve the issue. They only recorded my complaint, saying that the Italian staff were not working and would need a few days to look into it. After over a week, I finally got feedback saying the last 800 euros charged was the deposit pre-authorization that wasn't processed before and was retroactively charged. A week later, AVIS reversed the pre-authorization. Regarding the forced upgrade fees, AVIS claimed it was because I was late and no similar cars were available, hence the upgrade. I pointed out their slow service; it took one and a half hours to serve five people, with only one working counter. I waited long outside, and when I tried to explain my time was up, the staff rudely sent me back to the line outside! Eventually, they found they had overcharged me by 60 euros for fuel fees and refunded that amount. No further explanation was given.
Overall, it was the worst car rental experience I've ever had! AVIS in Italy, supposedly a large international rental company, provided terrible service, with hidden and forced charges. I'll never choose AVIS again! Be cautious with AVIS in Italy! This rental experience was extremely poor!
The guy was nice behind the counter and upgraded the car but I sat there for 45 minutes waiting for the car with only 4 people ahead of me. The lady in front of me had been there 1 1/2 hours!
when they realised the that we have plenty of luaggage, they made sure we have a good size car!!! Bravo, Insurance offered incase we needed it, to reduce cost when theft and/or damage but not needed

Avis is really terrible. When I arrived at the airport, they first asked if I could drive a manual car. I said no, so they told me they only had one automatic car left, which was twice as expensive. Now, after final settlement, it turned out to be three times more expensive. I returned the car with a full tank and had paid for the toll in advance. It's outrageous. Once you sign, they don't recognize anything. I saw that Avis has the most negative reviews, seemingly managing to survive by deception. I swear I will never rent an Avis car again. Everyone should be cautious! Previously, I rented with Europcar in Norway and other countries; the price was always what I paid in advance, never like this!
Having red many negative reviews on AVIS I have to admit that I was a bit worried. Joined their preferred client scheme to better understand how they operate and I would recommend that every client does it as well... Had a pleasant experience at the desk, friendly and efficient with the added bonus of a free upgrade to a top of the range Seat Alhambra practically new! It certainly made our holiday more pleasant. Also thanks to the preferred client scheme I went directly to the car skipping the long queue at the collection booth. Car was clean and sanitised with the key in a sealed bag. Went in fearing the worst and came back having another favourite rental company. If I was simply lucky I cannot tell but based on my experience I would certainly recommend.
About QEEQ:10.0/10
This year there were very few offers and priced were very high compared to previous years but with qeeq I had the lowest price for the category. It was easy, the communication was good and will certainly use it again.
The staff's attitude was atrocious and the car model listed in the app was unavailable. They aggressively tried to upsell other models at an increased daily rate.
The rental company had a guide who was very polite. However, the person who assisted me during the rental was not very professional, especially since he kept speaking Italian to someone else while talking to me.
Most importantly, I ended up paying almost double the rental fee, which was very irritating.
In addition to credit and debit cards, you can now pay for online car rentals with cryptocurrency! Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) are accepted. Curious about how long a Bitcoin transaction takes or how to pay with Bitcoin? Read our FAQs for more details.
